OXFORD STUDIES IN LANGUAGE CONTACT

Most of the world's speech communities are multilingual, and contact between
languages is thus an important force in the everyday lives of most people. Studies
of language contact should therefore form an integral part of work in theoretical,
social, and historical linguistics. As yet, however, there are insufficient studies to
permit typological generalization.

Oxford Studies in Language Contact will fill this gap by making available a
collection of research monographs which present case-studies of language
contact around the world. The series addresses language contact and its con-
sequences in a broad interdisciplinary context which includes not only linguistics
but also social, historical, cultural, and psychological perspectives. It will not only
provide an indispensable source of data for the serious researcher, but will also
contribute significantly to theoretical development in the field.
