family. It would be interesting to see Martha Jimenez again, but in five or
twenty-five years from now.

NOTES
1. This is a good example of a participatory ritual and a media-constructed
ritual occurring simultaneously.
2. I identify myself and those in similar cultural circumstances as
"Mexican-American" to locate my cultural identity within the Latin-American
cultural spectrum. Recently, there have been ongoing debates concerning iden-
tifying/labeling individuals with Mexican or Latin American ancestry (the
same holds true for other cultures). I will not comment upon the other labels
used to identify those with Mexican ancestry: Chicano/a, Latino/a, Hispanic,
and so on. The choice of certain labels is a political decision, based upon ideol-
ogy, and/or socioeconomic class status, regardless of generational status in the
United States, Spanish-language usage, and/or practices of Mexican cultural
traditions.
3. Interview on 5 March 1996 with a married Mexican-American woman
who lives in a small midwestern city.
4. Interview on 2 March 1996 with a married Mexican-American woman
who lives in a large western city.
