Durang The Philadelphia Stage from the Year 1749 to the Year 1855 was published in the Philadelphia Sunday Dispatch in 1854, 1856, and 1860. It was never published in book form. This selection is from the copy in the Univer- sity of Pennsylvania Library, arranged and illustrated in seven volumes by Thompson Westcott, vol. 1, pp. 2-5. Charles Durang ( 1794- 1870), dancer, pantomimist, actor, stage manager, danc- ing teacher, author, and critic, perhaps secured this account of the Comedians from London from Lewis Hallam when they appeared together at the South- wark Theatre in the summer of 1807. However, the information may have come through Charles's father, John Durang ( 1768- 1822), who had made his debut as a dancer with the Old American Company in 1784 and thereafter frequently performed on the same stage with Lewis Hallam. John Durang was the first American-born dancer to gain recognition on our stage and during his career of thirty-five years was not only dancer but also ballet master, pan- tomimist, puppeteer, actor, and manager.
