Thekla: Your subject.

Prince: Come down to me then! I've made my appearance here
like a character from Shakespeare. I've taken a fancy to you, and
I'm growling the order at you.

Thekla: (sighing) Shakespeare's age is past. We're living three cen-
turies later.

9. Thekla: I'm very fond of my brother. His distress will be the hardest
thing for me to bear.

Prince: Then I'm an intruder into peace and contentment. I tempt
an angel to tell lies?

Thekla: Every breath that I've drawn since yesterday evening when
I first saw you has been sinful. But a prince! A young melancholy
hero! I've been singing folk-songs, in which he continually
appears, for so long now, that I was head over heels in love with
him before he actually came.

Prince: And does he live up to expectations?

Thekla: Completely.

Prince: That's a confession, Thekla.

Thekla: It's meant to be. Should I otherwise be talking to you at
night from my bedroom window?
