Hamburg University, Germany; the Evangelische Akademie in Hamburg;
and the American Association for the Philosophic Study of Society.

Several of my graduate students also gave me comments on the
manuscript, especially Richard Rinard, Annette Holmann, Andreas Rickerl,
Fred Goos, and Nancy Smith. Being confronted with it in class they could
scarcely escape, but bore up with fortitude.
