Everything connected with Trinity involved a "first," of course, but the scientists' success that morning proved especially sig- nificant in three areas: the Trinity test evoked the first serious analysis of whether or not an atomic explosion might somehow ignite the atmosphere and thus bring about the end of life on earth. It produced the world's first experience with airborne radioactive fallout and introduced the uncertainties that still exist in this area. Finally, the decisions Harry Truman made because of Trinity inaugurated a debate among scientists, his- torians, theologians, and now the general public, that shows little sign of disappearing. What follows, then, is the saga of Trinity Site. But first it is necessary to lay a little background.
