THE CHILD AND THE SCHOOL

New aims and ideals of education. Not so long
ago, educators seemed to be more concerned with
the curriculum than with the pupil. When the
child entered school, he was confronted with an
inflexible and unvaried program of instruction.
If he fitted into this standardized scheme, he
passed with a fair degree of regularity from one
class to the next, and in due season possessed an
education. Legal enforcement was obtained to
insure that he stay in the schoolroom the required
number of days and weeks and years--as if a time
limit were all sufficient to make a success of the
learning process. If a child was unsuccessful, he
was considered lazy or stupid. In either case, the
educational system assumed no responsibility for
his failure.

In that era of education, although children of a
