assistance above and beyond the call of a chapter author. A special
personal thanks goes to Bob Hamrin, for freeing up Carol's time for the
final writing and editing, and to the Committee on Scholarly Commu-
nication with The People's Republic of China, for sending Tim to
China in 1982-83.

In a more general sense, we are indebted to those who have guided
our academic training and provided continued interest and support--
for Carol, Maurice Meisner and Ed Friedman, and for Tim, Pierre
Ryckmans, John Israel, and Philip Kuhn. Many other friends and
colleagues have participated in the larger intellectual project of com-
prehending the personalities, institutions, and ideas shaping modern
China. Their cooperative style has been an inspiration and a delight,
not to mention being a good deal more efficient than isolated individ-
ualistic research. But in the end, the faults and errors are our own. We
invite your criticism and suggestions as we continue to refine our
understanding.
