CHAPTER 10

Ideas for Preventing
Problem Behaviors

OBJECTIVES
This chapter will help you, among other things, to:
List the steps in the self-fulfilling prophecy process.
Defend the importance of the self-fulfilling prophecy as a pedagogical tool.
List specific categories of punishment.
Defend whether or not educators are as much in favor of punishment as they
may, at first, appear.
Identify seven performance skills used by actors that could be used by teach-
ers.
Defend the claim that teachers should make more use of performance skills in
their classrooms.
There is no doubt that preventing discipline problems before they occur
is preferable to correcting them after they take place. The articles that follow
address such preventative measures. Perhaps these very readable articles will
whet your appetite for further study! The articles include:
"Teachers as Pygmalions: good or bad, what we expect we generally get"
The self-fulfilling prophecy is presented as a pedagogical tool to benefit all,
not just a select few, students.
"Changing teachers' attitudes toward punishment"

An exercise to challenge whether or not teachers really see a place for punish-
ment in today's schools.

"Acting lessons for teachers: Using performance skills in the classroom"
