ROY HARVEY PEARCE is a Professor of English at The
Ohio State University, and has also taught at The
University of California at Berkeley, The Johns Hopkins
University, and The Claremont Graduate School. He
is the author of The Savages of America ( 1953);
editor of Colonial American Writing ( 1950) and,
with E. H. Cady and F. J. Hoffman, The Growth of
American Literature ( 1960). He is, with William
Charvat, General Editor of the forthcoming Cen-
tenary Edition of the Tales, Romances, and Essays of
Nathaniel Hawthorne.
