This secondary bibliography of reviews focuses on Saroyan's career in the theatre, but it also includes several related reviews of his non-dramatic writings. The theatrical reviews refer to a then currently running production.
1936-1939
1936
R001 Gregory Horace. "The Significance of Saroyan." New York Herald Tri- bune Books ( 23 Feb. 1936): 7.
Inhale and Exhale is full of mindless repetition. It reveals the "flaws of personality inflated to the nth degree." Saroyan will be remembered mostly for championing the down and out during the depression.
1937
R002 "Saroyan's Childhood in the Wine Country." Newsweek 10 ( 14 Aug. 1937): 26.
Saroyan's Little Children is unfairly criticized by the press. His writing is fresh and alive. The communists are annoyed because he refuses to join their cause. His taste in music encom- passes "noisy jazz, cowboy songs and harmonica solos."
1939
R003 Anderson John. "My Heart's in the Highlands' Presented at the Guild." New York Journal American 14 Apr. 1939, 16.
This surrealist play "tug[s] your heartstrings." It is impossible to figure out the meaning, but it is "poignant" theatre. The acting and directing are excellent. The performance is full of "hokum and beauty."
