what made her and her generation of policewomen different from those
who came before them.

Inspiration of a different sort came from my family. My parents be-
lieved I was glued to my computer, for whenever they called or visited,
that's where I was.

Very special thanks are due my husband, David, who somehow sur-
vived the disruption to normal living this book engendered. A writer
himself, he was able to understand my obsession with the project, if not the
length of time and amount of living space it took.
