At a time when the theatre was experiencing a heal-
thy need for new means of expression, chance brought
me to the École du Vieux-Colombier, an active center
of dramatic research and experimentation. What I
learned, and what I myself later achieved or attempted,
prompted me to write these pages.

Throughout this book, the Mime (with a capital M)
will indicate the medium, the work, the art. The mime
(with a lower-case m) will designate the agent of action.
This convention will avoid explanatory circumlocutions
and confusion.
