lege, which Joyce attended, was Catholic. Later the Royal
University became the National University. Joyce had his
degree from the Royal; I, coming after him, had mine from the
National University.

I have often heard the Royal University spoken of dispar-
agingly on the ground that it was not residential, as Dublin
University (Trinity College) is. Actually the Royal turned out
some of the best educated people I have ever known. It did
not give a practical or pragmatic education, but it succeeded
in producing cultivated and even learned persons, of whom
Joyce was one.
