References to these editions of the writings of Descartes, Spinoza,
and Leibniz are by page number (preceded where appropriate by
a volume number in roman numerals). From time to time,
however, reference is also made to specific individual works, such
as Descartes Principles or Spinoza Ethics, using the original
subdivisions which are common to all subsequent editions and
translations (for example, Principles II, 10; Ethics I, prop. 25).

Works by all other authors are referred to in the notes by the
authors' or editors name followed by a page (preceded
by a volume number where appropriate); full details may be
found in the Reference List at the end of the book.
