Chapter 5
Celebrities and Women of
Song

entertainers, or both. Included among the composers and lyricists in the
previous
chapters are some sixty prominent orchestra conductors (or bandleaders), famed
instrumental soloists, vocalists, and stars of stage and screen--superstars such
as Louis Armstrong and Bing Crosby; Leonard Bernstein and Duke Ellington;
George M. Cohan and Noel Coward; and Jelly Roll Morton and King Oliver.There are others, however, who also composed and wrote lyrics: entertainers,
producers, directors, authors and even politicos and government officials. It is
they who are listed on the following pages of this chapter. In addition, a
special
section within this chapter is devoted to the many women not otherwise listed
(such as Dorothy Fields, Peggy Lee, Carolyn Leigh, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitz-
gerald, and at least a dozen more composers and lyricists of the female gender).
