of money and materials, many foreigners feel, at best, indifference,
at worst, downright hatred toward us. There are many reasons for
their feelings, but a basic one is that although we have accepted
world leadership, we have not yet accepted the responsibility of re-
specting the validity of cultures other than our own. Until we do, we
will not find the mutual understanding upon which solid friendship
must be based. In the past, the West has made little effort to under-
stand the East; the seeds of this ignorance have borne bitter fruit and
may do so again. Only by understanding and respecting the culture of
Japan can we hope to penetrate beneath deceptive surface appearances
and to find common ground in the essential humanity that underlies
cultural differences.
