The pronunciation of mediæval Provençal is, for a number of reasons, an extremely intricate subject. The following indications are intended only to help the reader pronounce the proper names in this book with something like correctness. To attempt more than this would only cause the reader confusion. VOWELS are to be sounded as in modern French. De is pronounced day. DIPH- THONGS: au = ou in out ; ai = i in fight ; ei = ey in they; oi = oi in oil. CONSONANTS: All the consonants are to be sounded, and there are no nasals like those in French. In general they are to be given the same sounds as in English. Ch = Ch in Charles; g is soft before e, i, and y (i. e., as in French) ;gn = gn in mignon- ette ; ll or lh = lli in million ; gu = hard g as in get; qu = k; z at the end of a word = ts. ACCENT: The last syllable has the accent if it ends with a consonant; otherwise the last but one.
