prove overwhelmingly attractive to other underdeveloped lands in Asia, Africa and Latin America, and to India itself. To many Americans it appears clear that the United States should insure that India succeeds. Walter Lippmann, the distinguished columnist, believes this to be the free world's "glorious gamble" which it must take to preserve freedom. Other Americans are less sure that this country can effectively aid India under its present policies of attempting to achieve economic growth under "socialist planning."
The articles in this compilation, giving both Indian and American views, deal with the many related problems of India's predicament and what, if anything, the United States can do about it. At the outset several articles touching on the Indian historic scene are included. In great part India's present plight arises directly from its deep cultural patterns, as diverse and complex as any nation's in the world.
