VI
Paul Claudel

(Notes for intimate memoirs)

-- PAUL CLAUDEL, 1948

These notes are not intended to be a profound study of Paul
Claudel, they are simply some personal reflections on a dramatist
whom I loved. I only hope that they may interest those who feel
as I do about him. My earliest memory of Claudel's work brings
me back to l'Atelier and to the bare and comfortless room of the
school where Madame Dullin, who had a predilection for Claudel,
was teaching us L'Annonce faite à Marie. 2 I can still hear the
melodious, sing-song voices of the pupils saying 'O ma fiancée à
Violai . . . ne
.' These words generally pronounced with eyes

1 Perfect drama must have the shape of a logical construction in which
each character's behaviour is rigorously bound to that of the others and is
only explained by the conclusion. Everything in it must be part of the
whole and every part must be made to connect with the others. There is
in drama a kind of compelling rigour which leaves no room for hollow
lyricism. The work which comes nearest to this austere ideal is Britannicus
by Racine.--PAUL CLAUDEL, 1948.
