bothered, too, by the idea that the homosexual component in
themselves or others may indicate some kind of impaired sexual
identity--in men, a lowered masculinity, or even effeminacy.
But perhaps the single most troublesome assumption has been
that every mature person would be heterosexual were it not for
various fears and neuroses developed from parental and social
misfortunes.

In recent years, the actual and often complex nature of homo-
sexual behavior has finally become approachable. It has turned
out to be quite different from traditional descriptions of it. The
character of heterosexual behavior, too, has proved to be some-
thing other than what is ordinarily thought. In looking at these
matters, biology deserves the first word concerning the nature of
sexuality in general and homosexuality in particular.
