About the Author

David S.G. Goodman is a Lecturer in the Department of Politics,
University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He was formerly a
Research Fellow at the Contemporary China Institute, London
School of Oriental & African Studies, and was educated at the
universities of Manchester, London, and Beijing (Peking). His
previous publications include China: The Politics of Public Security
( 1976), with the late Tom Bowden; A Research Guide to Chinese
Provincial and Regional Newspapers ( 1976); and various articles on
Chinese politics and society in the academic press. He spent the
academic year 1978/9 in Beijing.
