pen, concepts as foreign to our Western minds as the venera- tion of the Virgin or the use of icons become, if not immedi- ately acceptable, at least comprehensible and invite our further study. A whole new horizon of Christian thought and life opens to us in these brief chapters about one of the grand divisions of Christianity.
This book is the most significant ever written to present the Eastern Orthodox Church to Western readers. Its French version met such approval that an English text has been called for. Readers who compare this with the French edition will note many additions and changes. These occur for two reasons: first, the author has reviewed his original manuscript in Russian, and, second, the present text is derived from that Russian original which was drastically cut by its French editors.
The translators join with the author in the hope that this book may be useful in promoting that better acquaintance between the great confessions which is the indispensable first step toward reunion.
