On behalf of Radcliffe College, I am pleased to present this vol-
ume in the Radcliffe Biography Series.

The series is an expression of the value we see in documenting
and understanding the varied lives of women. Exploring the choices
and circumstances of these extraordinary women--both famous and
unsung--is not merely of interest to the historian, but is central to
anyone grappling with what it means to be a woman. The biographies
of these women teach us not only about their lives and their worlds,
but about ours as well. When women strive to forge their identities,
as they do at many points throughout the lifespan, it is crucial to have
models to look toward. These women provide such models. We are
inspired through their example and are taught by their words.

Radcliffe College's sponsorship of the Radcliffe Biography Series
was sparked by the publication in 1972 of Notable American Women, a
scholarly encyclopedia sponsored by Radcliffe's Schlesinger Library.
We became convinced of the importance of expanding the public's
awareness of the many significant contributions made by women to
America, continuing the commitment to educating people about the
lives and work of women that is reflected in much of Radcliffe's work.
In addition to commissioning new biographies, we decided to add
reprints of distinguished books already published, with introductions
written for this series.

It is with great pride and excitement that I present this latest
volume.
