Sibbald as improving laird, medical and natural scientist, historian, and geographer, inter alia, who wished to lead a 'virtuous and philosophick lyre', was a leading figure in the early stages of the Scottish Enlightenment ( Emerson, 1988).
See the additions to TMS edn. 6, 1790 (III.2.35), contrasting the 'futile mortifications of a monastery' with the 'ennobling hardships and hazards of war'. Unlike Hume, how- ever, Smith never went on a military campaign.
There are many references to French authors in Smith's writings, and there are many French books in his library (Mizuta), including Molière works ( 1749, 1773) and Fénelon Télémaque ( 1778), but the editions post-date the father's lifetime.
GUL MS Gen. 1035/63, 20 Feb. 1723, James Oswald appointed factor to manage Hugh Smith's affairs; SRO Service of Heirs, C22/60, 29 Mar. 1724, younger Adam Smith retoured heir to his father; GUL MS Gen. 1035/71, 13 May 1735 (from London), William Smith's account rendered to executors of Adam Smith, WS, includ- ing South Sea Co. stock; Scott ( 1937: 21-2, 134).
Gifford ( 1988: 412-13) has details of the castle and the mansion house rebuilt by William Burn in 1824. Revd Gordon Simpson, Trinity Parish Church, Leslie, Fife, wrote to me on 18 Aug. 1993 about the local tradition concerning a mansion house dating from Late in the 17th cent. On a visit in November 1993 I asked the residents of the castle and the mansion house to point out to me where they believed Adam Smith was snatched.
On the Stoic system of the passions, see Sandbach ( 1975: 59-68) and Long and Sedley ( 1988: 410-23); Smith responded deeply to Epictetus and the Roman Stoics, Cicero, Marcus Aurelius (whom he called Antoninus), and Seneca--see TMS intro.; Waszek ( 1984).
Lord Deskford wrote to James Adam as follows in 1761: 'I expect we are just going to begin a reign in Britain of Taste and Architecture in which it will give me much pleasure to see you make the greatest figure of anybody, if 'tis not my old friend Bob, who I would pardon though he were to outshine you' ( Fleming, 1962: 279).
