NOTE ON APPENDIXES, &c.

THIS translation was originally made from the ninth German
edition of Das Heilige, from which Appendixes I-IX are taken.
One of the German appendixes, on 'Myth and Religion in
Wundt's Völkerpsychologie', and some other matter which seemed
of less interest to English than to German readers, were omitted
with the concurrence of the author; on the other hand Appendix
X, 'The Expression of the Numinous in English', was added by
the translator.

Appendix XI was added to this translation in its fifth impres-
sion ( 1928), together with additions to the text at the close of
Chapters VIII and IX, from the fourteenth German edition.

The appendixes of the later editions of Das Heilige, as had been
pointed out in a Translator's Note to the third English impression,
had by this time grown so numerous that they were published
with additional matter in a separate volume entitled Aufsätze das
Numinose betreffend (Essays concerning the Numinous)
. One of these,
'The Resurrection as a Spiritual Experience', was added to this
translation as Appendix XII. Some other supplementary matter
was published as Religious Essays, A Supplement to the Idea of the Holy,
by R. Otto, translated by Brian Lunn ( Oxford University Press,
1931); and to give the reader some indication in what directions
The Idea of the Holy has been thus supplemented, the Table of Con-
tents of Religious Essays has been included here as Appendix XIII.
