Bibliography

What follows is intended to suggest the main types of primary sources utilized
in this study and to offer suggestions for further reading in leading secondary
works.

I. Statistical material

Most important here is: "Direction du travail", Statistique des grèves et recours
à conciliation, 1899-1914
( 15 vols., Paris, 1900- 1915). See also the censuses
of 1901, 1906, and 1911 (Résultats statistiques du recensement général de la
population), published, in the first instance, by the Ministère du commerce,
then by the Ministère du travail. For general statistical summaries, see the
Bulletin de l'Office du travail, 1900- 1914. For wages and prices, see "Ministère
du travail et de la prévoyance sociale", Salaires et coût de l'existence a diverses
époques, jusqu'en 1910
( Paris, 1911).

II. Archival material

The Archives nationales has many reports on major and minor strikes, on the
activities of various unions, and on government plans in strike situations. Many
pamphlets and union newspapers are included in some of the dossiers. The F7
series consists of police materials, but these can cover a broad range of subjects.
F22 has holdings from the ministries of commerce and labor, but these are not
very useful and are incomplete; presumably, substantial records from these
ministries remain to be opened.

The records of the Prefecture of Police in the Seine Department are inval-
uable and well catalogued. Departmental archives in the Series M contain
police materials primarily, with press clippings often included. The quality and
comprehensiveness of the records vary from department to department. Hold-
ings in the Nord, Loire, and Bouches-du-Rhône are most elaborate, but nowhere
is the coverage as complete as in Paris.
