THE OUTSTANDING event of the summer of 1892 was the riot at Homestead, Pa., where many strikers were killed by hired Pinkertons and the Coal and Iron Police, a private body employed by the steel and mining interests. This was a labor con- flict of the first dimensions and the World whole- heartedly took the side of the men. The rights of labor were more obscure then than now. Most of the rioters were Slavs who had been imported to work at starvation wages while their employers fattened under a tariff passed to "protect American workmen." Naturally, as the men became a little enlightened they had discerned the unfairness of their position and, having no backing but their own hands, resorted to violence.
The World's support of the strike brought it much criticism and Mr. Pulitzer was roundly blamed for the animus shown by the news editors in charge. The reproofs of his contemporaries led Mr. Pulitzer to believe that the paper had suffered from overzeal and he put a damper on.
