Compiled by Bert F. HoselitzIn the compilation of this bibliography several already avail- able bibliographical studies of Lord Acton's work have been con- sulted. Of greatest use was the bibliography of Lord Acton's works compiled by W. A. Shaw, and published in his work A Bibliography of the Historical Works of Dr. Creighton . . , Dr. Stubbs, Dr. S. R. Gardiner and The Late Lord Acton, Lon- don, Royal Historical Society, 1903. In addition to this work the information provided by Cardinal Gasquet in his work, Lord Acton and His Circle, and the items furnished by him to the editors of Acton History of Freedom and Other Essays (p. 5 97)) was very helpful. Finally, use has been made of the bibliography compiled by F. E. Lally, published in his work, As Lord Acton Says, Remington Ward, Publisher, Newport, Rhode Island, 1942. In several cases Acton's manuscripts in the Cambridge University Library have been helpful in corroborating or correcting in- formation derived from other sources. The published works of Lord Acton have been subdivided in six groups. An attempt has been made to arrange his publications chronologically in each group according to the date of composition or publication.
