work for the analysis of collective action and administration, both
public and private. But we were never able to work out and agree
upon a phrasing which both thought adequate. Since Professor
Commons' death we have explored again the possibilities of ap-
propriate titles and have decided to call the volume "The Eco-
nomics of Collective Action." This title acknowledges his great re-
solve to work out a theory of economics relevant to the dominant
problems of the twentieth century, which he considered a new age
of collective action by corporations, labor unions, and political
parties.

When I left Florida in July, 1944, Professor Commons entrusted
the manuscript to me, asking that I edit the same and see it
through the press. This trust I have endeavored to keep in the
belief that future students of economics might be able through this
volume to participate to some degree in seminar with John R.,
whose penetrating observations opened up the vast field of the
economics of collective action to the thousands of students attend-
ing his classes.
