BIBLIOGRAPHY
THE decision to exclude from this bibliography all works published in learned
periodicals and confine these to the notes inevitably gives a very misleading im-
pression. From Professor Willis, the greatest of nineteenth-century medieval
archaeologists, onwards much of the most important work has been published
in periodicals, and such names as Bilson, Brakspear, St John Hope, and Peers
hardly appear, or occupy so modest a place as to give no indication of the impor-
tance of their work to the study of the subject as a whole. The Antiquaries Journal,
The Archaeological Journal, Archaeologia, The Journal of the British Archaeological
Association
, The Journal of the Royal Institute of British Architects, and those of many
local archaeological societies, together with the great topographical collected
works such as the Victoria County Histories, the Inventories of the Royal Com-
mission on Ancient and Historical Monuments
, and the Guides and leaflets issued by
the Ministry of Works, have a quite exceptional importance.
