This essay and a similar piece by Smart Piggin have been developed from a shared intel- lectual base stretching back some years. I am grateful for his comments and stimulation in the preparation of this chapter. We are jointly engaged on a series of projects in the history of evan- gelicalism in Australia. Piggin is the senior author of "Australian Evangelicalism, 1788-1988" (working title of a forthcoming monograph), while Dickey is general editor of the forthcoming "Australian Dictionary of Evangelical Biography." Much of the empirical data underlying this chapter is drawn from these larger projects.
