Soledad Brothers Defense Committee: A prisoners' rights organization in
northern California, targeted heavily by COINTELPRO during the early 1970s.

SPU: Special Prosecutions Unit of the Cook County, Illinois State's Attorneys
Office. The SPU was devoted, during the late 1960s, to the physical repression of
the Chicago Black Panther Party.

subversive: FBI newspeak for anyone with a dissident political view.

"surreptitious entry": FBI euphemism meaning burglary performed by
agents.

SWAT: Special Weapons and Tactics teams, paramilitary units which have
proliferated within most U.S. police organizations since 1970.

SWP: Socialist Workers Party, an old left, Trotskyite organization targeted by
COINTELPRO.

terrorist: An FBI term, presently utilized by the entire government, meaning
anyone engaging in resistance (armed or otherwise) to physical repression by the
U.S.

"unfriendly journalists": FBI euphemism covering reporters and editors who
publish facts the Bureau does not wish to have known, or who refuse to publish
FBI-approved disinformation. Investigations are usually opened on such uncoopera-
tive characters, and a few have been subjected to COINTELPROS.

The United Front: A southern Illinois civil rights organization targeted by
COINTELPRO during the early 1970s.

US: The United Slaves organization, a black nationalist group in southern
California duped into physically attacking the Black Panther Party through an
elaborate COINTELPRO.

USA: United States Attorney, chief federal prosecutor in a given area who
usually works closely with the FBI in criminal prosecutions.

Venceremos: A multi-ethnic radical organization which grew out of RU in the
mid-1970s; targeted by COINTELPRO.

Weatherman: An armed formation which emerged from SDS in 1969, the
period in which COINTELPRO was approaching its zenith. Weatherman was later
known as the Weather Underground Organization or WUO.

Young Lords: A former street gang turned Puerto Rican independence or-
ganization, targeted by COINTELPRO.

Young Patriots: A white Chicago street gang turned political, targeted by
COINTELPRO.

YSA: Young Socialist Alliance, youth wing of the SWP, targeted by COIN-
TELPRO.
