encouragement at different stages in my professional development. In addi-
tion, my professional career has been and continues to be profoundly influ-
enced by the wisdom, guidance and example of my mentor and friend Don
Lively, Dean of Florida Coastal School of Law.

During my time at Creighton University School of Law, I have had the
benefit of financial and academic support for my research and writing proj-
ects. I would like to thank Dean Larry Raful for ensuring the necessary sup-
port. I would also like to thank my colleague and friend Joe Allegretti, who
willingly took the time to share his insights and advice concerning the book
writing and publishing process.

Families are, of course, our first foundation. The love and encouragement
of my parents, Helen and Ernest Lawson, Jr., has enabled me in so many
positive ways that I cannot begin to repay them. This book is dedicated to
them as a small step toward repayment. A special thanks also to my sister,
Martita, and my nephew, Derrick, whose influence over the years has kept
me grounded and "normal." And last, but certainly not least, my love and
gratitude to my husband, John, who encouraged me on this project and
sacrificed countless hours together so that I could complete the book on
time. Thank you.
