TWELVE YEARS HAVE PASSED since Germany: A Short History was first published. The gratifying interest in the book led to five printings of the first edition.
In this second edition, the final chapter and the chronology have been extended to provide coverage of developments since the mid-1970s, but the body of the main text remains unchanged. The bibliographical essay has been expanded to about twice its original length: current material on the recent past was added, new publica- tions on earlier German history were cited, and a number of titles on German cultural history were included. Work on the bibliography, with the collaboration of Ilse E. Detwiler, was facilitated by just having completed a book-length annotated bibliography on West Germany. *
I wish to acknowledge the cooperation of Morris Library and the support of the Office of Research Development and Administration, both at Southern Illinois University.
