Language Association of America and the Harvard University Library.
Since the war this research has been carried on in Europe with the aid of
an Ann Radcliffe Fellowship, and has been furthered by the courtesy of the
officials of the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris and of the Bibliothèque
Royale in Brussels.

Throughout the years the interest of friends and colleagues too numerous
to mention here has added greatly to the pleasure of the task, but my debt
is particularly great to Professor J. D. M. Ford of Harvard University, under
whose direction the research was first undertaken, for his unfailingly kindly
and scholarly counsel. Of equal importance has been the help of my husband,
Major Sumner Willard of the United States Military Academy; his assistance
has included years of encouragement and hours of proof-reading the text
with me. Without such devotion, the publication of this work would never
have been possible.
