3 Choosing the Appropriate 12-Step Program for Your Client Most of the addictive disorders have more than one 12-step program that addresses that particular problem. Choosing the appropriate program for a specific client requires an inte- gration of the therapist's understanding of the unique as- pects of both program and client. This chapter will discuss the differences and similarities between each of the programs that addresses a specific addiction or behavior. Chapter 4 will discuss how to integrate the material in this chapter with the specific client's needs and issues, in order to make the best re- ferral. For an overview of the structure of 12-step programs in general, please refer to chapter 1. Each section will discuss the philosophy, attitudes, popu- lation characteristics, and specific features of each program. The programs discussed are broken down into the following categories: chemical dependency, eating disorders, sexual addiction, compulsive gambling, nicotine addiction, and family/relational issues.
