abstain from the behavior completely. It is important for the therapist to be able to differentiate between individualizing a program and colluding with resistance. Therefore, if in doubt it is usually more helpful to encourage the client to try the 12-step program recommendation.
CONCLUSION
Educating the client about 12-step program involvement is a comprehensive process and may be quite lengthy. The clinician may devote the bulk of several sessions to assisting the client in bonding into the 12-step program. The benefits for the client and the therapist have been discussed in previous chapters. Once the groundwork has been laid for participation in a 12-step program, the therapist can begin to integrate the client's recovery process into psychotherapy, which is the subject of the next chapter.
