This essay extends arguments developed in "Thoughtless Assertion and Political Delibera-
tion," American Political Science Review ( September 1994). Conversations at the University of

( Chicago, April 1994) were instructive in its formulation. Thanks to Natasha Levinson, Jacq.
Madden, Cris Mayo, and especially Nick Burbules and Bonnie Honig for helpful comments
on an earlier draft and to my political friends at the Center for Anti-Violence Education. I
dedicate this essay to my grandmother who died as I was finishing it.
