THE BIBLE

The English translation of the Bible here used as a basis is the RSV, although I have freely
made changes where either clarity or accuracy seemed to require them. There is at present,
however, no satisfactory translation into English of those parts of the Septuagint that are
based upon the Hebrew: therefore I have had to make my own.

Behind my references to Scripture in the original languages or in versions other than
English lie the following editions:

French Bible (BJ): La Sainte Bible: traduit en français sous la direction de L'École Biblique de
Jérusalem
.
Paris: Les Éditions du Cerf, 1961.

Greek New Testament (Nestle-Aland 27): Eberhard Nestle and Erwin Nestle, with Barbara Aland
, Kurt Aland, Johannes Karavidopoulos, Carlo M. Martini, and Bruce M. Metzger,
Novum Testamentum Graece. 27th edition. Stuttgart: Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft, 1984.

Greek Old Testament (LXX): Alfred Rahlfs, ed., Septuaginta: Id est Vetus Testamentum graece
iuxta LXX interpretes
. Stuttgart: Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft; Athens: 'H 'Eλληνικᇷ4
Bιβλικὴ 'Eταιςία,
1936.

Hebrew Scriptures, Masoretic Text (MT): K. Elliger and W. Rudolph, Biblia Hebraica
Stuttgartensia
. Stuttgart: Deutsche Bibelstiftung, 1966-67.

Italian Bible (BEP): A. Girlanda, P. Gironi, F. Pasquero, G. Ravasi, P. Rossano, and
S. Virgulin, eds., La Bibbia: nuovissima versione dai testi originali. Milan: Edizioni Paoline,
1987.

Latin Bible (Vg): Boniface Fischer, John Gribomont, H. F. D. Sparks, and W. Thiele, Biblia
Sacra: iuxta Vulgatam Versionem
. Stuttgart: Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft, 1969.
