THE PURPOSE of this documentation is to assist readers attempting to broaden their scholarly inquiry. Every effort has been made to credit properly sec- ondary sources and refer back to the location of original source materials, giving close attention to where primary materials may be found. In order not to over- burden the manuscript, I have taken the liberty of reducing the length of the notes section in the following ways: First, since often five or more business letters are cited as source material for one sentence of a narrative, citations have been clustered in one end note for each paragraph within the text. Source material has been placed in direct relationship to its placement in the textual passage. When it is unclear which source is being quoted, a parenthetical statement follows the citation. Second, ab- breviations for some citations which are used frequently and in several chapters are given below. These abbreviations are used throughout the notes; consult individual sets of chapter notes to find the meaning of other specific abbreviations.
The bibliography was designed for those wishing to pursue this particular area of inquiry. It is not intended either to show the author's prowess in accumulating data or to be an exhaustive compendium on late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Americana.
