today the one stressing individual freedom, the other social
control; naturally they affect the creative processes of music.
The place of the composer in the new world is by no means
ideal but we have not reached the point where the Adminis-
tration of Propaganda and Agitation has been asked to correct
the situation, liquidate the shortcomings of composers and
provide for the development of music "along realistic lines".

Writings of Musicians and thoughts about music will
always be used as documentary supplements to notation. It was
a happy idea to make this Book of Musical Documents, for
such an anthology, besides being interesting to the scholar is
both instructive and pleasing to the layman.
