dear friend, Ann Kouatly, shared weekly in the triumphs of a
finished chapter or the frustration of tracking down an elusive piece
of data. Toni Robinson, offered appropriate words of encouragement
on this project as she has throughout our long and very special
friendship. My fellow doctoral student and subsequent good friend,
Jean Egan, provided support and the wonderful sharing of
information available only from someone who has very successfully
trod the same path. My father-in-law, Bernard R. Stave, has, for
many years, served as both supporter and inspiration. My husband,
Bruce M. Stave, has been an integral part of this effort, as he has
been in every other part of my adult life. It was in discussion with
him, seven years ago, that I determined to pursue this topic.
Subsequently, he shared his ideas, accompanied me on my out-of-
state interviews, critiqued almost-completed chapters, and performed
myriad lesser tasks as well.
