The following is a chronology of all musical stage works included in the main body of
this encyclopedia, subdivided by decades and proceeding from Free and Easy ( 1873) to
Jelly's Last Jam ( 1992). Outstanding musical shows are marked with a single dagger (°)
for the benefit of those readers who are seeking some guidance in the study of the history
of black American musical stage and who may wish to read about these musicals in the
approximate order that they were first written or produced. Operas and operettas are
usually indicated by (O), and adaptations by (adapt.). Shows with two or more editions
are usually listed only once, during the decade of the first edition, with the dates of other
editions given in parentheses.
