A protesting "tribe" of hippies protest conscription and burn their draft
cards at a "be-in." Claude, who has received his draft notice, decides to be
conscripted into the army and refuses to burn his draft card. His friends
Berger and Sheila attempt to dissuade him, but to no avail. Sheila is with
Claude on his final night of freedom. The next day, his hair is cut off when
he is taken by the army. This first musical of the hippie movement offered
a spectacle of nudity in the first act's finale. "Aquarius" became a sort of
anthem for the protest generation. The play was revived on Broadway in
1977, but by the time Czech director MiloS + ̆ Forman was able to get his
