shifted. Some of those difficult questions have been resolved.
Others, perhaps sadly, still create problems for all the peoples
of Ireland, as any common and lasting resolution to the list of
contemporary questions and issues cannot be found.

To write a book like this is ultimately a solitary pastime, but I
have to acknowledge the assistance, help and guidance of
friends and colleagues in the world of Irish history who have
directly and indirectly shaped this work and my very under-
standing of Ireland. The series editor, Jeremy Black, deserves
special praise for applying his creative mind to the manuscript,
and for spending many of his precious hours on improving the
text immeasurably. On a personal note I take the opportunity to
acknowledge the friendship of the Terrill family. To them this
