Chronology

The purpose of this chronology is to show the principal events described in the text
and to relate them to selected events overseas. With the exception of a few happen-
ings outside England, the relevant point in the text may be found by reference to
the index. Reference to books and plays is selective, mostly confined to those
mentioned in the text. The right-hand column includes matters involving English
foreign policy as well as events in Scotland, Ireland, overseas countries, and the
high seas.
