GLOSSARY AND INDEX OF NAMES
THIS list includes all names of any importance. The references are
to the pages on which they occur. As a guide to pronunciation, the
stress is indicated by an accent; and in some instances two syllables
are divided by a hyphen or the number of syllables is specified. Many
names end in 'eus'; unless shown otherwise, this is one long syllable
which rhymes with 'deuce', e.g. Orpheus. A final vowel, unless other-
wise marked, is to be pronounced as a separate syllable, whether it
follows another vowel or a consonant, e.g. Pasiphae and Penelope.
