and, in particular, what we have called the "ecclesial dimension" of his thought, have never been considered with the attention they ought to have drawn.
The five lectures represented in this volume are only out- lines. Each opens up a topic worthy of much more profound and detailed study. Our hope is that some readers will find here an invitation and a stimulus to go further and to join the ranks of the Zwingli scholars.
We would like to express our gratitude to those who gave us the opportunity of presenting these lectures in the university town of Princeton: former President John A. Mackay, President James I. McCord, and Professor George S. Hendry, whose kind- ness, understanding, hospitality, and friendship remain for us a very happy remembrance. My deep gratitude goes to Walter J. Hollenweger, whose patience was put to the test in verifying my quotations, and, last but not least, to Lewis S. Mudge, who under- took the hard task of looking carefully at this text to make it readable in English.
