Citizenship is one of the most important and controversial debates in contemporary society. There is, however, a great deal of uncertainty about the meaning of citizenship. At best it can help us to understand and express our rights and obligations; at worst, it may be an empty slogan. In this book, the authors draw on research with over 700 teachers to describe what teachers mean by 'good citizenship'; to find out what influenced the nature of teachers own citizenship; and discuss what may need to be done to implement effective citizenship education. They build upon their discussions with teachers to make recommendations for work in schools and in programmes of inservice and preservice teacher education.
